Do mosquitoes spread COVID-19?

As the weather warms up and we start spending more and more time outdoors be aware there are several things that you can do to prevent mosquitoes from feeding on your family and pets.

A mosquito problem can make being outdoors uncomfortable, we all know those bites are itchy, painful and cause unsightly irritation of the skin and swelling. The health risk from mosquitoes comes from the diseases they are known to spread.

Do mosquitoes spread COVID-19?

No. Mosquitos do not spread COVID-19.  According to the W.H.O. (World Health Organization) there is no evidence that mosquitoes can transmit COVID-19 to humans.  

There are several known diseases that are spread by mosquitoes including malaria, West Nile Virus, Zika Virus, Encephalitis, and others.  Mosquitoes are responsible for more human deaths than any other animal in history.

What can I do to prevent mosquito bites?

Some good cultural practices anyone can do to prevent mosquito bites is to reduce their population.  Removing standing water from your property is essential.  Mosquitoes can lay eggs in very damp soil, they must have water present for the eggs to hatch. So make sure to:

Do mosquitoes have a nest?

There are over 3,500 species of mosquitoes but only a few dozen species build “nests”.  The mosquitos in our region do not build nests, this makes it trickier to eliminate them. Once the female mates she will lay 200-300 eggs each time she has a blood meal.
